Concern for the global ozone layer and the resulting regulations in the United States and throughout the world have led to an industry investigation into potential alternatives to CFCs, including R-503. Using the criteria of environmental and personal safety, and cooling performance, the refrigerant producers and equipment manufacturers have embarked on a multi-million dollar search for replacements for CFCs, including R-503.
KLEA 508A has been identified as an excellent replacement for R-503, across a wide range of products. We have led the world in the production and introduction of HFC-134a as an alternative refrigerant and continue that role today as the world's largest producer of this refrigerant.
KLEA 508A is a zero ODP, azeotropic refrigerant composed of HFC-23 and FC-116.
KLEA 508A has been assigned A1 ratings by ASHRAE, and recognized as "Non-Flammable" by Underwriters Laboratories*.
KLEA 508A has extremely low toxicity. The recommended occupational exposure limit (OEL) of 1000 ppm (8-hour weighted average) is the highest level given to any chemical, and is the same as R-503.
KLEA 508A can be used in new and existing stationary equipment designs. Its properties are nearly identical to those of R-503, such that new designs or retrofits require minimal modifications to achieve equivalent levels of performance, capacity, and efficiency to R-503.
KLEA 508A has been proven reliable in equipment used in very low temperature applications, such as medical or blood storage, or freeze drying applications, where no other refrigerant is available with the suitable properties as a replacement for R-503.
For these reasons, KLEA 508A is becoming the most universally accepted replacement for R-503 in the most demanding applications.
Please note that not all products are available in all markets.
*R-508A shows no flame limits in air at ambient pressures, when tested according to ASTM E-681, as interpreted by ASHRAE Standard 34-1997 and Underwriters Laboratories. Certified by Underwriters Laboratories
